We prepare and deliver freshly cooked meals to persons within our community who are incapacitated, or are otherwise unable to prepare a nourishing meal on their own, and who have no one else who they can depend upon to do this for them.
Who We Are
Meals on Wheels is an organization that has provided an important service to our local community since 1976.
We are located at 103 South Road in Paget (right across from the Modern Mart) and, from this location, with four part time staff and more than 150 volunteers we produce and distribute meals to our clients all across Bermuda.
Our part time staff organize our food requirements, oversee our kitchen operations and coordinate our volunteers. We also develop and maintain a relationship with each individual who receives our service, and with the medical and social services that refer them to us.
Meals on Wheels is a Bermuda registered charity (No. 109). In 2010 we were incorporated as a company limited by guarantee.
What We Do
Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers freshly cooked meals to people within our community who are incapacitated, unable to prepare and cook a nourishing meal on their own, or who have no one else they can depend on to do this for them.
We prepare between 180 and 200 meals 4 days a week and deliver them right into the homes of the needy. We cater to clients requiring diabetic, renal, vegetarian, gluten free and low salt meals as well as regular diets.
Our volunteers cook the meals, package them up, and deliver them island wide from Somerset to St Georges. We are providing much more than a meal by providing a watchful eye on the health and safety of our seniors.
How It’s Funded
Meals on Wheels is funded mostly by contributions from individuals and from our corporate community. We also receive an annual government grant, and we participate in various fundraising activities throughout the year.
We charge $6 per meal to those who can afford to pay it, and about 40% of all recipients receive the meal at no cost due to financial hardship. $6 represents about half the cost of actually producing the meal.
We have a very active board of directors each of whom is committed to the charity, and brings expertise in the area of nutrition, food purchasing, finance, and other disciplines that we need to run effectively and efficiently.
We are audited annually. Our auditors are Deloitte & Touche Bermuda.
