Meals on Wheels 50th Anniversary Volunteer Luncheon was held on October 18th providing MOW and the community with an opportunity to thank our volunteers for their service and dedication. Without them MOW simply would not exist.

It was especially satisfying for Meals on Wheels staff to prepare and serve lunch to those who give of their time to do the same for others. MOW Chef Alex Dowling and Kitchen Manager Theresa Ebbin prepared and served a delicious meal with wine and beverages donated by Goslings and John Barritt & Son, respectively. The menu for the day included: beef brisket carving station, lemon scented wahoo, chicken breasts stuffed with spinach, feta and cranberries, roasted potatoes, rice with onions and peppers, honey-glazed carrots, green beans with onions and almonds, root vegetable bake and rolls. An assortment of desserts was also served including an Alex original – avocado bread pudding.

The always entertaining Bruce Barritt added to the festivities by serving as Master of Ceremonies. We were also pleased to be joined by the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors – The Honorable Tinèe Furbert who graciously acknowledged MOW’s service to the community and assisted Mr. Barritt in the presentation of Long Service Awards .

Long Service Awards were presented to those in attendance who have volunteered for 10-plus years. Awardees Antony Bertrum, Joan Blee, Mary Brier, Cathy Cattell, Jeannie Center, Mingo Cook, Sandy Gascoigne, Jenny Gibbons, Joan Harvey, Don Johnson, Marion Jones, Moira Lindo, Margie Lloyd, Gladys Madeiros, Sara Peniston, Susan Shreeve and Alicia Virgil received cedar pens manufactured locally by Bobby DeCosta. Several long-term volunteers were not able to attend and we thank them most sincerely for their service and support.

In addition to Long Service Awards, all volunteers in attendance enjoyed gifts donated  by Bermuda’s business community and individuals. Many other individuals, businesses and organizations gave of their time and/or loaned and donated event essentials. To them we say thank you very much for your generosity and list them here with gratitude.
